From the outside, our Club looks like a house, but once people enter through the front door they are amazed at how spacious the building is – like a Tardis is one person’s description.
The Club was founded in 1899 as a meeting place for Conservative supporters in March, and initially consisted of a bar and snooker table – nothing for the ladies, it was men only then! Work on the bowling green began soon after World War I, initially by digging a large hole and filling it with railway ash and cinders, before being covered with Cumberland turf.
This took about ten years to finish, and since then March Conservative Club has been synonymous with bowls. As the years progressed numerous additions were made to the premises, leaving us with our current building. The most recent structural changes have been the refurbishment of the front bar, coupled with the addition of a disabled toilet and enlarged entrance foyer. 2012 and 2013 saw the re-decoration of the lounge and the function room with new carpet, tables, chairs and bar stools in the lounge with new banqueting chairs for the function room, all in matching fabric. Of course, the most important change to the Club came in 1998 when ladies were made full members, with equality with the men. Previously ladies were associate members, unable to vote or join the Management Committee. Within a year the first lady in 100 years, Diane Bradshaw, was elected to the Committee. There are now four ladies in total on the Committee, who all have a great input into the running of the Club.
Throughout the year, the Social Committee organise dances, dinners, film nights, race nights, casino nights, quiz nights and other fun nights, such as German Oompah nights, Pudding Clubs, Ceilidh nights, Hog Roasts, Barbecues and Forties nights. We have a great time at our functions, why not join us and find out?
The Bar sells predominantly Greene King beers, including some of those from it’s Belhaven subsidiary. Among the beers & lagers available from the pumps are IPA, Ruddles, Mild, Belhaven Black, Carlsberg, San Miguel, Thatcher’s Gold cider and Guinness. Of course there are a wide range of spirits and wines which are available by the glass or bottle. Coffee and tea are also available and Jane behind the bar provides a magnificent range of sandwiches and cakes.
New members are welcome, please contact the Club to arrange a time to visit (the doors are on an entry card system so you can’t just walk in) and fill in the application form. Once your name has been accepted, you’ll receive an invitation to come and pay your membership fee. It’s as easy as that!
